How Much Space Does a Rabbit Actually Need?

14 September 2026

Rabbit space guidance has one quirk that trips almost everyone up: the official minimum isn't written per rabbit β€” it's written for a pair, because a single rabbit isn't considered an acceptable way to keep one at all.

Rabbit space requirements by number (combined shelter + run)

Both official sources publish this as a pair-level minimum, not a strict per-rabbit rate β€” we scale linearly beyond a pair as a reasonable estimate, flagged as our own extension in both cases.

The minimum is for a pair, not an individual

Most housing guidance scales cleanly per animal β€” twice the pigs needs twice the space, and so on. Rabbits don't work that way: welfare guidance states its minimum for a compatible pair, because rabbits are highly social and living alone is now widely considered a welfare problem in its own right, not just a preference.

A pet-shop hutch is usually just the shelter, not the whole picture

A lot of commercially available hutches are built to older, now outdated assumptions about how much space rabbits need β€” current guidance expects a shelter plus a permanently attached exercise area, sized together, not a hutch on its own with occasional supervised time out.

Shelter and exercise space are two separate budgets

Much like the coop-and-run distinction for chickens, rabbits need both a secure shelter to rest in and daily, permanent access to a genuinely large exercise area β€” not a bigger shelter instead of a run, and not a run they only get supervised access to occasionally.

Space alone isn't enough β€” see our weather guide for why heat, not cold, is the real seasonal danger for rabbits.

Common questions

Why is the minimum given for a pair, not one rabbit?
Because rabbits are social animals that shouldn't be kept alone β€” official guidance is written around a compatible pair as the smallest sensible unit, not a single rabbit.
Does a standard pet-shop hutch meet the recommended minimum?
Often not on its own. Many commercially sold hutches are smaller than current welfare guidance recommends, which typically expects a hutch plus a permanently attached run or living area, not the hutch alone.
Is exercise space different from housing space?
Yes β€” rabbits need daily, permanent access to a separate exercise area on top of their shelter, not just occasional supervised playtime. The two are genuinely different space budgets.
