How Long Are Rabbits Pregnant? Gestation and Kindling Signs
23 September 2026
Rabbit pregnancy is short compared to the other species on this site, and the clearest sign it's ending is something the doe does to herself, not just a physical change you can observe from outside.
Gestation: about 31 days
Rabbit gestation runs about 31 days on average, with a normal range of roughly 28 to 35 days from mating. Our due-date calculator shows the expected date alongside an earliest and latest date to cover that range.
Fur-pulling: the clearest sign kindling is close
Peer-reviewed research on rabbit maternal behaviour, hosted by the US National Institutes of Health, describes nest-building driven by specific hormone changes in mid-to-late pregnancy: in the days to hours before giving birth (kindling), the doe pulls fur from her own dewlap, abdomen and flanks to line the nest. A bare-looking patch of fur on those areas, combined with visible nesting material being gathered, is a genuinely reliable signal that kindling is close β more reliable than trying to judge it from the outside the way you might with a larger animal.
What this guide doesn't cover
Unlike our goat, sheep and horse pregnancy guides, we haven't found a university-extension source covering rabbit labour stages or how long kindling itself typically takes β the university-hosted literature we found covers nest-building behaviour and hormones, not a practical labour timeline the way extension fact sheets give for other species. Several hobbyist rabbit-breeding sites describe kindling as usually quick, often finishing within 30 minutes once it starts, but none of those sources meet this site's sourcing bar, so we're not citing a specific figure here.
Before you breed
A litter changes space and cost quickly β rabbit litters can be large, and kits grow fast. See our space guide and health guide before breeding, and use plan my setup to model the numbers for the litter you'll actually have.

Common questions
- How long is a rabbit pregnant?
- About 31 days on average, with a normal range of roughly 28 to 35 days from mating β genuinely short compared to most other backyard species.
- What is fur-pulling in a pregnant rabbit?
- In the days to hours before giving birth (kindling), a doe pulls fur from her own dewlap, abdomen and flanks to line her nest β a documented, hormone-driven behaviour that signals kindling is close.
- Does this guide cover the birth process itself?
- Not in detail. We looked specifically for a university-extension source covering rabbit labour stages and duration the way we found for goats, sheep and horses, and didn't find one meeting this site's sourcing bar β so we're disclosing that gap rather than filling it with hobbyist-blog detail.
