How Much Does It Cost to Keep a Goat?
15 September 2026
The first number that changes a goat budget from what most people expect: you're always buying at least two. Goats are herd animals and shouldn't be kept alone, so every cost below is realistically a pair cost from day one, not a per-animal figure you can halve.
Purchase price for a pair, not one
Pet-quality goats commonly range from $60 to $2,500+ depending on breed, age and pedigree β a pet-quality wether (castrated male, the common choice for a companion animal, not breeding) often starts around $75β250, while registered breeding stock runs considerably higher. For a typical pet-quality pair, budget roughly $150β500 total as a starting point, not per animal.
Fencing is arguably the real cost centre, not housing
Goats are notoriously good at testing and escaping weak fencing β cutting corners here tends to cost more over time through repairs, escapes and the stress of both than building it properly once. Beyond fencing, routine costs add up too: feed commonly runs $20β30 a month per goat (see how much a goat eats for how that scales with weight), and health care β vaccinations (roughly $20/year) plus worming (roughly $30β35/year) β adds up to around $50β60 a year per goat. Use our cost of keeping calculator to combine feed and a vet allowance for your own herd size.
Hoof trimming is a routine cost with no equivalent for most other species
Goat hooves need trimming roughly every 6β8 weeks β either a farrier or vet visit, or the time and tools to learn to do it yourself. It's easy to leave out of a first budget entirely because it isn't a cost most other backyard animals have in the same recurring way.
Use this as a planning floor, not a quote
Housing and fencing setup cost varies too much by build method and land to give a single responsible figure. Work out the indoor and paddock space you actually need first with our goat housing calculator or the combined land needed calculator, then price your own build and fencing from there.
Common questions
- Can I budget for just one goat to save money?
- No β goats are herd animals and shouldn't be kept alone, so the realistic purchase budget is always for at least two. Treat this as a fixed doubling of the purchase price and of most ongoing per-head costs, not an optional upgrade.
- Is fencing really a bigger cost concern than housing for goats?
- For many first-time keepers, yes in practice β goats are notoriously good at testing and escaping weak fencing, so cutting corners here tends to cost more in the long run through repairs, escapes and stress than building it properly the first time.
- What routine costs do goats have that other backyard animals don't?
- Regular hoof trimming is a genuinely goat-specific routine cost (every 6-8 weeks) that doesn't have an equivalent for most other backyard animals β either a farrier/vet visit or the time and tools to do it yourself.
