How much space do your goats actually need?

Based on university extension guidance, with or without outdoor exercise access.

Outdoor exercise area needed

50.0 sq ft

25.0 sq ft per goat

What this means

A roughly square shelter footprint would be about 5.5ft Γ— 5.5ft.

If you’re building a rectangular shelter, examples include: 5.5ft Γ— 5.5ft, 4.1ft Γ— 7.3ft, 3.0ft Γ— 10.0ft.

Goats are herd animals and shouldn’t be kept alone β€” plan for at least two.

Working backwards: how many goats fit?

There is no US federal or state law setting a minimum goat housing size. Figures here follow university extension guidance (Oklahoma State, Penn State and UMass Extension publish similar ranges). This tool is a planning guide, not professional advice β€” check with your local extension office or veterinarian before building.
How we calculated this +

Indoor shelter needed

Applies to:
United States β€” no federal or state law sets a minimum goat housing size
Assumption:
15 sq ft per goat is the practical starting point where goats also have outdoor exercise access; goats confined indoors for extended periods (e.g. winter) need closer to 25 sq ft per goat.
Calculation:
15 sq ft/goat (outdoor access) or 25 sq ft/goat (confined indoors) Γ— goat count.

Outdoor exercise area needed

Applies to:
United States β€” goats given outdoor exercise access
Assumption:
A flat per-head exercise-area figure on top of the reduced (15 sq ft) indoor shelter figure that applies once outdoor access is given.
Calculation:
25 sq ft per goat Γ— goat count, shown only when outdoor access is selected.

Rules can depend on where you live. National welfare requirements aren't the same thing as local planning, registration, nuisance or disease-control rules β€” check with your local authority before you build or buy.

What this means

There's no US federal or state law setting a minimum goat housing size. Figures here follow university extension guidance β€” Oklahoma State, Penn State and UMass Extension all publish similar ranges.

With outdoor exercise access, 15 sq ft of indoor shelter per goat is a practical starting point, plus 25 sq ft of exercise area per goat. Confined indoors for extended periods (e.g. winter), goats need closer to 25 sq ft of indoor space each.

Common questions

Is there a legal minimum goat housing size in the US?
No. There is no US federal or state law setting a minimum goat housing size. The figures here follow university extension guidance, not a legal requirement.
Can I keep just one goat?
Not recommended β€” goats are herd animals and can become stressed and unwell if kept alone. Plan for at least two.
Does a goat's weight affect how much space it needs?
The extension guidance figures used here (15/25 sq ft indoor, 25 sq ft exercise) are flat per-head allowances, not weight-banded, so this calculator doesn't ask for weight.
Why does confining goats indoors increase the space they need?
Extension guidance raises the indoor figure from 15 to 25 sq ft per goat when goats are confined indoors for extended periods, such as winter, since they no longer have outdoor exercise space to supplement it.
Can two goats share a shelter?
Yes β€” goats are herd animals and are normally kept in groups rather than singly. The figures above are already per-head allowances for a shared shelter and exercise area, which is how goats are meant to be housed.
What if my goats are different sizes?
The extension guidance figures used here are given per head, not by weight, so the same per-goat allowance applies regardless of size β€” there's no separate adjustment for larger or smaller breeds.
Is there a version of this for the UK?
Yes β€” see our UK goat housing calculator, based on RSPCA guidance.
