How Much Land Does a Donkey Need?

31 October 2026

Donkeys don't need as much land as you might think, and they shouldn't have unlimited grass anyway. The figure that matters is a safe area to graze and move around in, and it's per donkey, so a pair doubles it.

Half an acre per donkey

The Donkey Sanctuary recommends a minimum of 0.5 acre (2,000 square metres) of suitable and safe grazing and/or exercise area for each donkey. Its handbook puts a pair at about one acre (4,000 square metres) of field and stable area, and says the right amount depends on the type of land and the quality of the grass.

Less grass, not more

Donkeys are prone to putting on weight, which raises their risk of laminitis and hyperlipaemia. The Donkey Sanctuary advises carefully restricting grazing by limiting how much grass is available, for example with strip grazing behind an electric fence, and feeding barley straw to satisfy their need to trickle-feed. Looking after the land

  • Perimeter fencing should be permanent, secure and well maintained.
  • Remove or fence off poisonous plants, shrubs and trees; fruit trees may need fencing off in season.
  • Hard standing inside and at the entrance of the shelter, and hard-wood chippings in gateways that turn to mud.
  • Rest pasture where you can: the handbook says ideally for at least 12 months if it's badly damaged, and grazing it with cattle or sheep helps reduce worms.

Work out your own numbers

The donkey calculator gives land and stable space for the number of donkeys you'll keep. Stable space is a separate, much smaller figure: see how much space does a donkey need?

Common questions

How much land does a donkey need?
The Donkey Sanctuary recommends a minimum of 0.5 acre (2,000 square metres) of suitable and safe grazing or exercise area for each donkey.
How much land do two donkeys need?
About an acre (4,000 square metres) of field and stable area for a pair, according to The Donkey Sanctuary's handbook.
Can donkeys graze all day?
Usually not. Donkeys are prone to weight gain, which can lead to laminitis and hyperlipaemia, so The Donkey Sanctuary advises carefully restricting grazing, for example by strip grazing.
Can donkeys share a field with other livestock?
The Donkey Sanctuary's rehoming terms say its donkeys should not be kept with other livestock, and that horses, ponies or other livestock on the same premises should be managed and housed separately.
