How Much Space Does a Donkey Need? Stable Size Guide

31 October 2026

Donkeys need a shelter they can get into whenever they like, all year round. Their coats don't appear to be as waterproof as a horse's, so in a wet climate shelter matters more for a donkey than for a pony of the same size.

About 4.7m² (50 sq ft) per donkey

The Donkey Sanctuary's stable guide allows approximately 4.7 square metres (50 square feet) of covered bedded area for a standard, average-sized donkey, or about 9.4m² (100 sq ft) for a pair. That figure is the bedded area for resting. The guide adds that donkeys should ideally have more room to move around indoors if they can't go outside, and enough headroom to rear without hitting their heads.

What the shelter needs

  • Permanent, man-made shelter they can reach at all times, big enough for every donkey, with a roof and three solid sides (Donkey Sanctuary rehoming terms).
  • Hard standing inside and at the entrance, and a floor that drains well with bedding to lie on.
  • Doorways at least 1.2m (3ft 11in) wide for one or two donkeys, wider for bigger groups. A bottom door height of 107cm (3ft 6in) for standard donkeys, with a bottom bolt, since some donkeys learn to undo the top one.
  • A floor-level feeder rather than haynets or hayracks, with at least 0.75m (2ft 5in) of trough width per donkey so they can all eat at once.
  • Clean water at all times, in a securely supported bucket or a self-filling trough about 50–60cm (1ft 8in–2ft) high.

Land is separate

Grazing and exercise space is a much bigger figure, about half an acre per donkey: see how much land does a donkey need? The donkey calculator gives both for the number of donkeys you'll keep.

Common questions

How big should a donkey stable be?
The Donkey Sanctuary allows about 4.7m² (50 sq ft) of covered bedded area per standard-sized donkey, about 9.4m² (100 sq ft) for a pair, and ideally more room if they can't go outside.
Can donkeys use a horse stable?
Often, with changes. Horse stable doors at 4ft 6in are too high for standard donkeys to see over; The Donkey Sanctuary gives a bottom door height of 3ft 6in (107cm). Haynets and hayracks should be swapped for a floor-level feeder.
Do donkeys need a shelter in summer?
Yes. The Donkey Sanctuary says access to shelter through the day lets donkeys rest in the shade and get away from flies and midges.
Why do donkeys need more shelter than horses?
Donkeys' coats don't appear to be as waterproof as horses', so The Donkey Sanctuary says they need access to shelter 24 hours a day, especially in wet climates.
