Netherland Dwarf, New Zealand or Flemish Giant? Rabbit Breed Sizes Compared
24 September 2026
Our buying guide covers what to check before getting a rabbit, but not how much adult size varies by breed โ and it varies more than most first-time keepers expect. This guide sets out real figures from the breed registry's own official breed pages, from a rabbit that tops out under 3lb to one with no upper limit at all.
Adult weights, by breed and source
| Breed | Adult weight | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Netherland Dwarf | 2.5lb (1.1kg) maximum | American Rabbit Breeders Association |
| New Zealand | 12lb (5.4kg) maximum | American Rabbit Breeders Association |
| Flemish Giant | No maximum โ commonly over 20lb (9kg) | American Rabbit Breeders Association |
A Flemish Giant commonly outweighs a Netherland Dwarf by a factor of eight or more โ two animals that are the same species but genuinely different scales of commitment to house, feed and handle.
Netherland Dwarf: bred for small size specifically
Developed in the Netherlands in the early 20th century and now one of the most popular pet breeds on both sides of the Atlantic, the Netherland Dwarf's defining trait is its size โ ARBA's own breed page cites its โdiminutive sizeโ and brachycephalic (short, rounded) head shape as central to its appeal. Unlike some other small pet species on this site where โdwarfโ doesn't reliably predict size on its own, a Netherland Dwarf genuinely stays under 2.5lb for its entire adult life.
New Zealand: a working breed that became a popular pet
Despite the name, ARBA notes the New Zealand was actually developed in the United States, recognised in 1916, and prized originally for quick growth and meat production โ the New Zealand White's pelt was also valued for how easily it took dye. At a 12lb maximum, it sits roughly in the middle of the breed range and is a reasonable reference point for โan average-sized pet rabbit,โ the same role Pekin plays among duck breeds on this site.
Flemish Giant: no upper limit, and it shows
ARBA's own breed page is direct: there is no maximum weight for the Flemish Giant at all, and they โoften tip the scales at over 20lb.โ Believed to have originated in Flanders, Belgium, as early as the 16th century and exported to America in the 1890s specifically to improve the size of meat rabbits, the breed's docile temperament has earned it the nickname โGentle Giantโ โ but a calm temperament doesn't change the fact that housing, feeding and handling a rabbit this size is a different undertaking to a Netherland Dwarf, whatever its personality.
What this means for your plans
- Our space guide gives official minimum enclosure figures per rabbit generally, not scaled by breed โ a Flemish Giant and a Netherland Dwarf are held to the same published minimum even though the Giant needs meaningfully more room to actually be comfortable in practice.
- Budget feed for the breed's actual adult weight with the feed cost calculator โ a Flemish Giant eats considerably more than a Netherland Dwarf of the same headcount.
- Re-read our buying guide before choosing a breed โ adult size is a real, long-term commitment difference, not just a starting-cost one.
What we couldn't find
We checked three breeds with clearly published ARBA weight standards; ARBA recognises dozens more (Holland Lop, Mini Rex, Dutch and others each have their own breed page), which we didn't pull into this guide. The British Rabbit Council's own breed standards weren't reachable directly at the time of writing, so this guide relies on ARBA's figures alone rather than a UK/US pair the way most of this site's other content is structured.

Common questions
- How big do Netherland Dwarf rabbits get?
- The American Rabbit Breeders Association gives a maximum weight of 2.5lb (about 1.1kg) โ one of the smallest recognised rabbit breeds, and the smallest of the three compared here.
- How big do New Zealand rabbits get?
- The American Rabbit Breeders Association gives a maximum weight of 12lb (about 5.4kg) โ a mid-size breed originally developed for meat production, and roughly five times the maximum weight of a Netherland Dwarf.
- How big do Flemish Giant rabbits get?
- The American Rabbit Breeders Association gives no maximum weight for the Flemish Giant at all, noting they "often tip the scales at over 20lb" (about 9kg) โ nearly eight times a Netherland Dwarf's maximum.
- Which rabbit breed is easiest to house?
- By weight and footprint, the smaller breeds are the easier fit, but our own space guide's official minimums are given per rabbit generally, not scaled by breed size โ so a Flemish Giant and a Netherland Dwarf are held to the same minimum enclosure figure even though the Giant needs meaningfully more room in practice.
